I fully understand why someone in the US would feel threatened enough wanting to own firearms. With such high crime rates and availability to weapons, it is a very dangerous country for all parts. I even suspect that if I was an American, I would probably have been a weapon enthusiast myself.
But the problem is that the whole country is messed up from the core. If no one had access to those weapons in the first place – neither the "good" nor the "bad" guys (and yes, such places exist) – crime and violence wouldn't be that much of a problem to worry about.
People will that will harm others/use guns for illegal purposes will always find a way to get guns. If you take the guns away from only the good guys, it makes them vulnerable against the "bad guys" and the government if they become corrupt.
There's also the matter of the fact that there being about 300 million guns in circulation in the U.S. is a good deterrent the government to keep them from doing anything too tyrannical.
