playing medieval 2 total war as venice and here is what happened: Holly roman empire decided to siege my capital and another city near by. i fight them off and then siege one of there citys. the pope then decides it was obviously all my fault and excomunicate's me which makes all my citizens upset . Conclusion: screw the pope
my strat for gaining rep with the pope: take other religion's settlement and then tear down all public order buildings. i then give it to the pope as a gift and when they rebel the next turn i take it back and then gain extra for attacking the popes enemy.

but they can't produce it fast enough. that and news companies are probably making a ton of $$$ of talking about it, updating where it has spread so they dont want a cure to exist. its almost like people want something to be scared of lol.
