The US military has announced that they are respecting the religious rights of the Guantanamo prisoners during the month of Ramadan (when Muslims fast during daylight hours) by only force-feeding them at night.
I don't doubt we have a diversity of opinion on that point. I think it’s a criminal embarrassment and that its ongoing open-ended status demonstrates judicial impotency in the face of over reaching military power.
This is terrible. I was listening to the BBC on the radio, and they were interviewing this guy who went through the force-feeding operation to see what it was like. He described it at first as being uncomfortable, then after 5 minutes or so there came a searing unbearable pain. He also stated that the doctors preforming it were on the edge of tears, as they couldn't believe doctors who are trained to save lives were doing this to people. I sincerely hope they do close down Gitmo soon, but as long as it's open, at least they do respect other people's religions.
