Yes, it may seem a step backward, but using the current portal function *can become* a terribly frustrating experience during a game.
Likely due to a combination of lag and menu-specific features/glitches, I'm sure many here have run into situations where they were able to bring up the book menu but none of the menu selections performed their function. Specifically, they just act like normal inventory items instead of the selectable actions they represent. The bad news is that the probability of it glitching increases as one approaches the end-game and things get more hectic.
Cannot count the times I have repeatedly selected the book => portal to TP back to shrine for table defense, armor repair, or just get out of a sticky web situation... and the portal just would NOT activate. Since activating the book isn't usually (as much) a problem, maybe time-critical actions like shrine TP are better off not globbed into a sub-menu function highly prone to glitching?
