I don't see people who've specialized mining cobble in order to obtain different goods...but I get your point.
If you just set prices high (like 3-6 emeralds per block of dirt), and let people exchange 2 stacks of cobble for a single emerald, maybe they'll be put-off by a low profit/time ratio. I was thinking making purchasing goods a bit more time-consuming/tedious than actually getting the goods yourself, but if cobble is not a good base currency, maybe dirt?
