Welcome to the new Dwarfscraft CYOA (Choose Your Own Adventure) thread! Here's how it works, from the original thread when I was obsessed with chat formatting and making things look pretty:

It's not a FAQ because no one's ever asked.

Q: What is Choose Your Own Adventure?
A: It's a fiction genre. Remember those books that say "If you ____, go to page 42. If you ____, go to page 46."? That's CYOA. No one knows why it's always capitalized.

Q: What is this thread?
A: We're going to make one, one page at a time.

Q: How the heck are we going to do that?
A: Good thing you asked! I have a guide for you! And before you ask, I've done this on another forum before, and it's totally possible. It's hard once the story gets really long, but I'm sure we'll get the hang of it.


Posting Guide:
If you don't read this and still post, you're an idiot.

1) Start your post with the page number. This should be ONE greater than the previous person's page.

2) ctrl-f (or file-find, or whatever) every page for "go to #[yourpagehere]" For example, if your page is #26, you'll want to search for "go to #26".

3) If you find it, continue from their story. If they wrote about the character finding a box and then said "To open the box, go to #26", you'll want to write about what happens when you open the box. It's helpful to know the entire story so far when you do this, but if you don't, that's ok, just make it up as you go along.

4a) If your page has an unhappy ending, do not bother putting any 'go to's. However, please try to make sure that the thread doesn't hit a wall (no continuation). If it does, I will delete one of the unhappy endings and make my own continuation.

4b) If your page doesn't have an unhappy ending, you'll have to find the lowest-numbered unused pages. Look on the 'go to's on previous posts to do this. Then, list a few choices. For example, let's say that after opening the box, you find Tekkanix inside, and the lowest-numbered unused pages are #29, #30, and #31 (this might happen if, for example, page #25 had 'go to's for #26, #27, and #28). This might be your post:

"Well, it is just lying here in the middle of the street. That makes it pretty unusual," you reply.
He pokes his head out and looks at the road. "Well, would you look at that."

To invite him to come with you, go to #29.
To leave him be, go to #30.
To fight him, go to #31.

And it's done! It doesn't even have to be that complex, but that's a pretty good post length if we're ever going to get anywhere.


Important Notes
I said "important" so you wouldn't gloss over it.

- It can help to type your post in a program like Microsoft Word or OpenOffice Writer (or even Notepad), then refresh the page before you post to check if someone's gotten to your page before you, then paste and post. That helps remove duplicates.
- Please read the entire story from time to time! Sometimes there's some context that you might be missing when posting.
- Don't worry about someone taking the story off-track from where you think it should be headed! This is a free-for-all collaboration, not your own personal writing project. Don't get too serious, either (but, on the other hand, try not to do stuff that's just dumb).
- I'll be pretty heavily moderating this, and I invite other staff to do the same. If you see any problems with page duplicates, plot, continuity, or anything like that, please correct it any way you can, from editing to change a few details to deleting the entire post.

You awake slowly. It is dark, and you hear a breeze blowing in the background, but the air is still around you. You are wearing your pajamas that you put on last night, which are not enough to keep you from shivering from the cold. Is this a cave? Is it a prison? Or is it something more sinister?

How did you even get here?

If you crawl around ahead of you, using your hands to feel around, go to #2.
If you shout "Hello? Is anyone here?", go to #3.
If you sit still and wait, go to #4.

You crawl around, trying to figure out where you are, and see a faint light in the distance. As you get closer you see SOMETHING with spikes coming out of its back, it's muttering something about a person called Unknown being majestic, and about how it's too overworked.

To say hello to the creature, go to #5
To run away go to #6
To throw the nearest object at it go to #7

You decided it would be too risky to go off exploring so soon, after all you did just wake up. Instead, you hug your shivering knees and call into the darkness. You immediately hear you're quivering voice bounce around you. You silently wait for a reply, wrapping your arms tighter around your knees.

Suddenly you hear a sound, a quiet whisper, something that sounds like a voice, the voice of a small girl.

If you're heart is buzzing and you're too shocked to move go to #8
If you're eyes grow wide and you suddenly have the urge to explore go to #9

You wait and wait, trying to convince yourself you're stuck in a dream. Just a little longer, then you'll wake up. Pinching yourself, you feel pain, but when you close your eyes, everything somehow feels surreal. Just a little longer.

Suddenly, you hear a sound in the distance, like a growl, or perhaps a deep voice.

To crawl toward the sound, go to #2.
To shout out toward it, go to #3.
To continue waiting, go to #10.

You walk up to the creature you see. As you reach out to try and pet it, something or someone jumps on your back and puts a cloth soaked in chloroform over your face. You begin to feel nauseous before you fall unconscious. You wake up in pitch blackness trying to find out which way is up as your scenes are deprived. You start to see flashes of light. You are trying to work out if it is your mind playing tricks on you or if there is an actually light source.

To try stand up and work out what has happened, go to #11

To bury your face in dirt due to your fear and wait, go to #12

Standing up shakily, you feel the instinct to run away, but you steeled your guts to muster one more look at the figure. Your stomach dropped from the sight of the creature. Its head had an ugly shade of black on the side of its face, and its pupil was bright purple, sharp and intelligent, looking at your soul. The spikes on its back flared behind it and It let out a mighty roar of anger and you did the most reasonable thing to do. You ran. You see the cave splitting in three directions; Left, right, and forward.

Go to # 13 to go the the left
Go to # 14 to go to the right
Go to # 15 to go to the path in front of you.

You feel around for something hard to throw, and find only dirt. You pick up some of it to throw, but reveal a glowing, polished-looking object underneath and are dazed - who knew light could be so beautiful in times of darkness!
You put down the dirt, all of your rage suddenly gone, and pick up the shining object. Looking up, you see the creature as it really is: something like a large bipedal armadillo with spines down its back, staring at you eagerly. No, not staring at you - staring at the glowing, metallic object in your hand.

"Give Unknown" it says.

To ask what Unknown is, go to #16.
To run away, carrying the object, go to #17.
To give it to the creature the object, go to #18.

You are hearing voices of a little girl around you, but you don't know which way it's coming from. It seems to be coming for everywhere at once. It starts getting louder. You feel a dark presence, you know something is around you. But what? You are shivering with fear on the outside but on the inside you are worse. Your stomach is churning and you can't move. You start to see a ghostly spirit coming towards you. For a moment, you are trembling, but you start to realise that you are not alone, and that this ghost isn't going to do anything to you.

If you stand up with your arms out and slowly walk towards the spirit, go to #19.

If you stand and realise you could be in huge danger, go to #6

You get out of the box, trying to go into the direction that sound is coming from, but you feel like it comes from everywhere. And it's getting louder and louder and louder, until something happens. You feel the ground opening, and you fall in it. You don't know how long this fall was, but all you know now is that you are in a hospital.
"You were unconscious for almost a week. Welcome to the hospital." says one of the nurses.

Go to #20 if you want to ask the nurses what happened.
Go to #21 if you are too scared to do anything.
Go to #22 if you want to go out of the hospital, and try to see what happened.

Your stomach yearns for food as you continue to remain immobile, the dryness in your throat seems unbearable. And yet, you continue to wait, to anticipate the second you'd wake up. In fact, you've been staying in the same position for so long that you haven't realized that you were beginning to catch illnesses. Your eyes do a little spin, your back gives up on you, and you fall face first onto the stony floor, your cheek is being scratched and toyed by the rough surface.

You close your eyes, allowing a new and frightening kind of darkness to engulf you.
And then, you die.
What a pitiful death, it is.
